1909 Alaska Yukon Pacific Expo Harts Coin

The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was a World’s Fair held in Seattle, Washington in 1909. The purpose of the fair was to publicize the developments taking place in the Pacific Northwest. These developments were mostly due to the gold rush, which began approximately a decade earlier when gold was discovered in the Klondike region. During this time, a local art and antique dealer by the name of Jules Charbneau caught wind of the plans for the exposition. Charbneau came up with the brilliant idea of striking “souvenir” coins to commemorate the exposition. Ecstatic with the idea of this, Charbneau applied for patents for the design of the coins. He also helped to distribute over 10,000 brochures promoting the AYPE (Alask-Yukon-Pacific Exposition). Thankfully exposition representatives approved his proposal for the commemorative coins, which had already mustered demand by collectors. The coins are very likely to have been minted with Gold from the Alaskan gold rush and feature a Alaskan Mining theme.
